Inspiring Goodies: the series everyone was talking about, psychological safety and Clubhouse

Every month we’ll share three things that have inspired our thinking over the last month for you to have a look at, listen to or read:

1. The series everyone was talking about

Schitts Creek – it was the series of 2020 that everyone around me was talking about. We eeked it out as much as we could and we finished it last month. There is an extra behind-the-scenes episode called ‘Best Wishes, warmest regards’. Why is it inspiring? It shares insights into why the show is so successful from a character depth perspective and when you explore the inclusivity side of the show and how it has impacted the lives of those in the LGBTQ+ community you realise just how well written, directed and produced it was.

2. The importance of psychological safety

The importance of psychological safety in organsiations has been a conversation for a few years. I’m still reading The Fearless Organisation by Amy Edmondson (listening to it last year led me to buy it to scribble in it!). The book is packed with references to other research and clear theory behind why psychological safety is the foundation for organisations. There are references to how it differs to trust and the importance of how ‘unseen’ it is when someone doesn’t feel safe enough to speak up.

3. The importance of accountability

My weekly dose of inspiration is coming in the form of Clubhouse. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s the audio-only social platform that hit the world at the end of 2020 and the start of this year. Every Thursday at 16:00 GMT I co-moderate a room with Scott McInnes, Ann-Marie Phillips and Jim Egan. We have covered recent research reports, line managers and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on work. Every week I’m left with a buzzing brain and an injection of ideas and concepts to explore. You’ll find my write-ups from each conversation on LinkedIn every Thursday.

If you would like to chat further about my thinking or how it can be applied to help you and your team drop me an email  info@redefiningcomms.com.
