Cracking the challenges of leading from a distance

Leading remote teams and communication
Leading remote teams and communication

We’re very pleased to announce a collaboration with Lee Sheldon at Mastering Multi-Units on his new Leading Remote Teams programme available for teams of up to 14 people within organisations. The programme consists of five, two-hour sessions that will help leaders create a sustained focus on productivity, performance and wellbeing. My session is on communicating with hybrid teams and helping participants better understand their communication style, how it impacts others and how to communicate effectively.

Having worked with Lee in a previous role I know he is an expert in developing managers and leaders, particularly around leading remote teams. As Lee says:

Everyone deserves to have a great manager, regardless of where they’re based. The development of remote managers is too important to be left to chance. The Leading Remote Teams programme has been designed to upskill managers, developing their ability to stay connected and to deliver tangible benefits; from enhancing team effectiveness and productivity, to improving performance and results.

The importance of maintaining superb communication when leading people remotely and in a hybrid world is one I talk about often. I recently shared my seven must-read books for 2022 based on the books I enjoyed the most last year. One of them was The Long-Distance Leader: Rules for Remarkable Remote Leadership by Kevin Eikenberry and Wayne Turmel. I listened and also bought this book so that I could bookmark and highlight parts of it. I loved this book as it reflected my own thinking that remote or long-distance leadership is simply good leadership. According to the authors, as many as a third of leaders lead at a distance and the number is rising – and of course, this requires us to rely more on technology and less on face-to-face communication. It’s also full of practical things to try and I loved this quote:

“You are a leader when people follow you – if they aren’t following you, you aren’t leading.”

Please get in touch if you’d like to know more about this programme. If you’d like to find out more about becoming an impactful communicator, I share my advice in this short podcast episode.
